WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Are women really empowered in India? Has their position in today’s world changed? I really doubt it. Every year we celebrate Independence Day. But is this independence for everyone? Women cannot walk freely on streets. Still there exist many restrictions on women. They have to be back at home before nine. They cannot go alone in the night. If they do so they could be raped and molested. This is the truth of women empowerment and freedom for women.

Every day, we come across cases of rape and molestation. In the Dadri Beef Murder case, minister’s statement on the case shocked me. One of ministers said –“We must thank god that the angry crowd does not molest or raped the victim’s daughter and only have beaten the victim to death by bricks.” This reflects the mentality of people of India. This clearly points the position of women in India. But the minister was not wrong. The mob could have done that if they could beat someone to death only for eating beef. I feel very depressed on hearing such instances.

Moreover, still female foeticide and infanticide is in practice. Women are treated less than men. Cases of dowry practice, home violence have not decreased till now. Why to talk about women empowerment if we could not respect them, give them freedom, treat them equally. People must first change their mentality. Women must be given more security and respect. The country must be so safe for women so that they could move anywhere anytime without fear. This is the responsibility not only of government but also of each and every citizen of India.

After this task is accomplished, we would talk about WOMEN EMPOWERMENT.
